An exclusive interview with rising star producer ZenAware, who flawlessly blends pop, electronic and EDM sounds

Although he has not even hit his 20’s, ZenAware is a producer who clearly displays talent and versatility beyond his years. Based in Oregon, ZenAware has been honing his craft throughout his teen years, creating a unique sound that draws on the uplifting elements of pop and EDM music but also uses more complex elements of underground electronic genres. Above all, he seeks to make an impact with his infectious tracks; we have no doubt that he does, and will continue to do so.

ZenAware has just recently brought out a new track, featuring Los Angeles vocalist Suriel Hess and based on a cover of UK singer-songwriter Mahalia’s ‘Sober’. It’s a track that’ll get you over your ex in no time, with the heartfelt lyrics “You and I we're over / Me and you are done / When I wanted to be closer / You just wanted to run” and ZenAware’s quirky melodies, turning the track into a triumphant summer heartbreak hit.

Listen to ‘Sober (feat. Suriel Hess)’ by ZenAware, below:

We caught up with ZenAware and chatted about inspiration, underrated genres and his upcoming album.

To those not familiar with the sounds of ZenAware, how would you describe your sound?

I would have to say that it takes a lot of influence from all spectrums of dance music. A little bit of everything blended into a sound smoothie. Major elements come a lot from the future bass and pop genres, if I had to narrow it down a little bit.

How did it all start for you? Why music?

I was about 13 years old and all of my friends were getting in to drugs and alcohol. I didn't want to go down that path after seeing family members struggle with addiction. I had recently gotten into EDM and I really wanted to take a swing at it myself. I had always played the piano but I had no idea I could translate that into electronic music. Once I got the hang of Ableton it took off from there.

What three albums would you say influenced your sound the most?

Flume's debut album, and his second album "Skin". Another album that really inspired me was "Urban Flora".

Are there any key pieces of equipment that you can't live without?

Definitely my Akai keyboard. I wouldn't be able to come up with melodies without it.

What are some of your key influences in your music? Whether it be the sound created by others, imagery, films, nature etc...

I would have to say relationships, whether romantic or platonic. People’s actions and the way they make me feel really inspire me to create, even in negative situations. I also get really inspired by nature.

What is one sub-genre you think doesn't get the attention it deserves?

Oh man that’s tough... I don't know what it’s really called but whatever genre Two Feet makes.

Any new or upcoming artists on your radar that the world should know about?

Everyone on the Phuture Collective roster.

What single night out has been the most memorable for you? As a performer? As an attendee?

When I opened for Walshy Fire of Major Lazer. It was so packed! As an attendee, I’d have to go with seeing STRFKR in concert. It was so emotive and inspiring.

If you could collaborate with any artist, living or not, who would you choose and why?

Anderson. Paak his voice is so unique and smooth. I’d love to work with him.

What can we expect from ZenAware in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

I have an album coming out on 11/30/2018. It paints the story of this last year and I'm so excited to share it with everyone!

Famous last words?

"Oops."

We spoke to Marcus James and got to know the man behind the EDM genre he calls “emo house”

Vancouver-based Marcus James makes music that is difficult to box into a genre. Using house and EDM elements fused with alternative rock and pop punk sounds, Marcus James manages to do the seemingly impossible and create one gracefully complimentary sound using all of these influences. Making what he affectionately calls “emo house,” this rising star musician has been touring across Canada to Ottawa and Victoria to headline his own shows and holds down a residency at Celebrities Nightclub in Vancouver.

Listen to Marcus James’ track ‘Never Been Better feat. Amy Kirkpatrick’ below.

We caught up with Marcus James and chatted about guitar, the fusion of genres and “the Gary Vaynerchuck of EDM”.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?

I'm calling it emo house. I don't really know how else to describe it. I love dance music but I feel like there's an odd disconnect between a lot of producers and their vocalists that results in tracks being made that aren't really about anything. I draw a lot of inspiration from pop-punk and rock, and approach things from more of a songwriting standpoint.

How did it all start for you? Why music?

I played a few instruments in elementary school but nothing really stuck until Grade 9, when I started writing songs on my Dad's guitar. From there it took me all the way up until grade 12 to realize I was awful at singing and by that point I had discovered artists like Steve Aoki, Boys Noize, and The Bloody Beetroots. This was around 2011 when those guys were doing a lot of DIY electro stuff that definitely helped me build a bridge from the punk world to the dance world for me. I started producing electronic music in 2012.

What three albums would you say influenced your sound the most?

That's so hard. I draw influence from all over the place but a couple albums I'll never get sick of are Nirvana 'Unplugged' and Good Charlotte 'The Young and The Hopeless.' As for more current stuff I'm really loving the new Felix Cartal record 'Next Season.'

Are there any key pieces of equipment that you can't live without?

My guitars.

What are some of your key influences in your music? Whether it be the sound created by others, imagery, films or any kind of art form.

I always looked up to Steve Aoki for his work ethic. He's like, the Gary Vaynerchuck of EDM. Hands down one of the hardest working guys in dance music. As for imagery I'm head over heels for everything Mija does. The way she wraps visual art, video, clothing, and music together to create a story around her brand is really cool.

What is one sub-genre you think doesn't get the attention it deserves?

Future bass.... just kidding.
Um, hard to say. Maybe the experimental electronic stuff that guys like Dawn Golden and Ryan Hemsworth are doing. The world needs more of that.

Any new or upcoming artists on your radar?

There's this alt rock/rapper kid from Vancouver, 'Angst.' He's killing it. We haven't even met yet but I'm stoked to run into him eventually, I'm a big fan.

If you could collaborate with any artist, living or not, who would you choose and why?

Lil Peep. I love his stuff so much, he really changed music for a lot of people. In the realm of reality though, I'm super pumped to be working with someone on one of my upcoming projects who I've been a fan of for years. I can't say more than that, and I have no idea when it's coming out... but when it does it's gonna be a big step for me.

What makes your live performances different from the rest?

There's definitely something to be said for being able to connect with your crowd, and tell a story with your set. I love throwing a crazy sweaty party but it doesn't have to be really hard music the whole time to make it so. I think I've gotten a lot better at balance and momentum in my sets over the past year.

What single night out has been the most memorable for you? As a performer? As an attendee?

Probably watching Porter Robinson play his first ever live Worlds set in Vancouver at the Vogue Theatre.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

My most personal track I've ever written comes out next month, followed by a single on a label I've been wanting to work with for around a year. I also have a side project that'll be launching this fall as well, we have a bunch of music finished for that and it's a huge breath of fresh air from anything out there right now.

Famous last words?

Community over competition. Every time.

Dog really is man's best friend in 32Stitches' latest music video

Electronic and future-bass producer 32Stitches has just dropped a video for his uplifting single ‘Fallout’. If you want to watch a music video that really has the ‘aww’ factor, this is the one. The Mumbai-based artist has been going from strength to strength, collaborating and producing remixes for a host of acclaimed DJs and has now released a video for one of his exciting new singles, an original track which has been met with great appreciation from old and new fans alike and was followed by a slew of unique remixes. ‘Fallout’ has an infectious melody and a pulsing rhythm that makes you want to get up and dance; what’s so great about the song is that it has a depth and sentimentality that you don’t often find in a dance hit.

The song and video centres on 32Stitches’ relationship with his dog, Astro, and has the powerful message that lovers may come and go, the whole world may go up in flames (playing on the idea of an apocalyptic nuclear ‘fallout’), but your dog will always love you and be there for you. A true animal-lover, 32Stitches refers to Astro as, "my best friend and full time studio partner." The quirky and clean animation in the video for ‘Fallout’, animated by Tiara Motion, matches the upbeat and thoughtful mood of the track, and because the video flawlessly doubles up as a lyric video, one can experience and really appreciate the marrying of 32Stitches’ love for production and writing lyrics.

Watch the new video for 32Stitches single ‘Fallout’ below.

Hardwell reignites Cascada nostalgia with ‘Everytime We Touch’ big room remix.

All the true partygoers still have a little piece of Cascada’s ‘Everytime We Touch’; you could almost say everytime we hear the song, we “get this feeling”. The 2007 international smash became in instant classic with it’s feel-good melody, easy to sing a long lyrics and general ‘safe’ vibe.

It’s clear that Hardwell and Maurice West were also big fans of this EDM-gem, as they finally released their big room remix for the world to jam to. Hardwell has been playing this track as part of his live-set in countries all over the world, but he’s always kept the file to himself. The remix ups the ante a lot, transforming the once ‘bubblegum’ track into a jump-around-the-room-banger.
Hardwell even asked on social media if fans enjoy the track, but it’s clear that everyone is in love with this rework of a classic.

EDM icons CROOKERS share crazy remix of Mavi Phoenix’s anthem; ‘Los Santos’.

Crookers, the Italian duo behind some of EDM’s most iconic remixes of tracks like Kid Cudi’s ‘Day ‘N Night’ and ACDC’s ‘Thunderstruck’, have decided that it’s time to release yet another classic song to the line up in the form of Mavi Phoenix’s ‘Los Santos’.
Crookers have been staples of the global EDM scene, having been around since 2003 and having amassed more than 62 million streams on Spotify alone. Relative Austrian newcomer, Mavi Phoenix, has been steadily growing in popularity the last year or two, having been streamed on services like Spotify more than 4.5 million times, proving that she’s a new force to take note of.

‘Los Santos’ is an expletive-filled anger anthem about the effects of cyber-bullying and how you shouldn’t try and let it get to you. It’s not Mavi Phoenix’s usual lo-fi-pop sound, but she felt she had to release this track to vent some anger. Plus there's nothing wrong with an artist trying new sounds to see if it works for her.
Mavi Phoenix on the track: “Bullies are present everywhere in our lives, from the playground to adult life. I think the Crookers' remake of Los Santos strengthens my message not to care too much about it, show them the middle finger and keep on doing your thing and live your way"

It’s this same carefree song that caught the attention of the iconic Crookers, who gave the song a completely new spin. The CrookersInfinity Mix of Mavi Phoenix’s ‘Los Santos’, reimagines the the slow hip hop track into a massive and fast paced in your face anthem. It's easy to imagine scores of people at a festival singing along to the chorus while having the time of their lives having been granted the opportunity to vent some bottled up emotions.

You’ll want to check your surroundings before singing along though, as this song is definitely NSFW (but in all the right ways).

Listen to the track here:

KLYMVX Release new Single 'Siento feat. Marissa Chibli'

Parisian electro-pop duo KLYMVX share latest single “Siento ft Marissa Chibli” on June 1st via Sony Music/ SMART. Their newest tune 'Siento' delivers cheerfulness and good modes from the frist to the last second. A whistleing chorus, supported with melodic vocals by Marissa Chibli, 'Siento' will make you feel better and beam you to a beach where people dance with cold bevages in their hands.

Funny enough, quite similar to how this song was created. According to various surces across the internet, KLYMVX comment "...in the drop you can hear what sounds like a flute but actually isn’t. We were on a terrace with our beers (we were just messing around) and after having drunk two or three of them, one of us blew into his bottle and frankly, that’s how we found the drop!"

That's a pretty sweet idea generation process if you ask me. Listen to Siento below:

We interview EDM rising star Jai Nova

We recently spoke to up and coming EDM producer Jai Nova who has received great response in the industry and hails from Dubai. He is one of the latest artists we’ve had the chance to talk to after coming across his work on Soundcloud. Immediately I was drawn in by the unique sounds that he incorporates into his music. His strong grasp of lush sounds and electronic elements make him a powerhouse in the music industry. We ask him a few questions to figure this complex musician out.

Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?
Hey ! Im doing great thanks ! Im currently in the studio wrapping up some new music!

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
I don't really have a particular sound as I'm known to experiment with different genres but my recent projects have very commercial/electro pop sound.

What are the 5 albums and artists that have influenced you the most?
In no particular order: "True Colours" by Zedd,  "Encore" by DJ Snake,  "Adventure" by Madeon,  "Memories...Do Not Open" by The Chainsmokers and "R3hab" by Trouble. Not because they have some insane records but because each of these artists have crafted their art so well that they take you on a journey through sounds. This kind of approach is something I am trying to develop myself in my work.

What other artists do you really like at the moment and why?
Im a huge fan of Fabian Mazur at the moment. His records are sonically incredible. I always get an adrenaline rush listening to his work. 2 Upcoming artists on the radar would be Axollo and Retrovision. These 2 artists are amazing at their craft as well. Keep an eye out for them!

What are some of the key pieces of gear you use to write your tracks in the studio? Or do you prefer to use software and plug ins?
I start off simple with a piano or guitar and as my ideas develop I start composing on my Macbook Pro using Logic X. Im more of a "in the box" guy when it comes to the nerdy stuff. My favourite plugins are Serum by Xfer, Kontakt by Native Instruments, and everything by the guys at Waves.

Has your arsenal of equipment changed much since you first started?
Yes a lot. I started with a laptop and headphones using stock plugins on logic 9 at the age of 13. You can imagine how dreadful I sounded back then haha ! I still have all my old files!

Do you enjoy playing to an audience or working in the studio?
Its more of a full circle scenario for me as Im inspired to get in the studio after a show and once Ive made a track Im excited to test it out in a show so its a bit 50 50. If I had to choose I think playing out because peoples reactions fuel me.

If we gave you the budget to put a line-up together for a mini fest, who would you book and where would you play?
In the deserts of my hometown Dubai looking over the skyline with my homies Martin Garrix, The Chainsmokers, Skrillex, Madeon, DJ Snake, Zedd, Fabian Mazur, Dubvision, Myself, Dillon Francis...I think Ive blown the budget already right?

If you weren't a musician what would you be?
Probably still in the creative field. Im a bit of a perfectionist so Graphic Design or Architecture most likely.

Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects, DJ mixes or collaborations in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
I can't actually reveal a lot because my team will kill me but all I can say is there is sooo much new music coming over the next few months so watch my space!

Pop Artist Dervisis is about to release his debut single titled Missing.

Greek experimental artist Dervisis will be releasing his debut single ‘Missing’ on April 20th. The track will be released independently by Dervisis who was previously went by the name Kid Flicks. Having performed for several years between Athens and London at festivals like Eurosonic, Fengaros in Netherlands where he played alongside Dua Lipa as well as at Glimps in Belgium alongside Bill Ryder-Jones and Hiele. Previously performing under the pseudonym Kid Flicks, the creative muso received incredible support from big name publications such as CLASH Mag, DIY Mag, The 405, Bandcamp and Impose Magazine and has now decided to trade in the name for his current - solidifying his decision to go forward and really create a name for himself in the music world.

Dervisis considers himself a ‘musical chameleon,’ having collaborated and remixed for producers Tendts and Liphemra in 2016 releasing two homemade LPs through Greek label Inner Ear Records as well as a self-titled album through Klik Records - the artist experiments with an array of sounds and techniques. With beats that are very Balkan and Middle-Eastern influenced and Dervisis frequently uses Arabic instruments and darbuka-patterns in his production. With a Master of Music degree from the University of London, Nikolaos Dervisis borrows elements from an array of genres like electro, pop and punk.

‘Missing’ can definitely be described as one such song that expresses Dervisis’ exploratory style of making music. The upbeat song is a pop track infused with percussion and electronic elements produced by Dervisis himself. The tracks soulful vocals express Dervisis’ earliest musical influences by Stevie Wonder and Sun City Girls as well as giving a bit of insight to his history in his birth city Athens. ‘Missing’ is an explorative blend of electronic and pop that gets you bopping your head in splendour.

Speaking on the latest single 'Missing', Dervisis explains: “The idea behind 'Missing' was to create a pop track describing a needy and dysfunctional relationship, as a metaphor for my relationship with Athens, the city I grew up in. The past decade, due to the crisis (+ decadence of the city, unemployment, shitty jobs, rise of the far right, gentrification, the absence of my friends.who left to work abroad etc.) I have developed a weird relationship with Athens and sometimes I prefer missing the city than living here.”

The song will be available on all music platforms, in the meantime follow Dervisis onsocial media to keep up to date with his releases and show dates.

Uppermost releases 'Atoms ft. Birsen' ahead of 'Perseverance LP'

In anticipation of his upcoming album Perseverance, independent electronic producer Uppermost shared ‘Atoms ft. Birsen.’ The track premiered via Clash Magazine earlier this year, and has been a definite standout offering.

Uppermost has made a name for himself as a producer that crafts emotional compositions rather than merely making music. Based in Paris, Behdad Nejatbakhshe was raised Persian musical influences, and cites these as partly responsible for his inclination towards the emotional side of songwriting.

Commenting on the single, Uppermost states, “Birsen and I collaborated on this piece with the idea to create an atmosphere that goes beyond any music genre. The track carries a beautifully haunting feel, and Birsen’s airy voice adds a dream layer to it. We could probably say that « Atoms » is an anthem of humanity and inner peace.”

'Atoms ft. Birsen' is a noteworthy release from the French producer. Filled to the brim with reflection and existential friction,  'Atoms ft. Birsen' eases in with shimmering pianos and cosmic harmonies before a steady heartbeat thumps its way through Birsen’s celestial voice.

Perseverance LP will be released on March 23rd, and if 'Atoms ft. Birsen' is an indication of whats to come, we can't wait for it to drop. Pre-order here.

New Single 'Someone Other Than Me' by DRUGZZ is out

Future-bass artist DRUGZZ has just released his debut single ‘Someone Other Than Me’ via Super Serious.

Mastered by Joe LaPorta of Sterling Sound Studio, the Nashville-based artist has produced a sterling debut, and has been likened to the sounds of a crossover between Louis The Child and Simple Plan.

'Someone Other Than Me’ is a dizzying voyage through a brightly-lit abyss: driving bass lines, pounding percussive beats and confrontational vocal delivery spiked with a wry sense of humour. Blending elements of electronica, future-bass, EDM, pop-punk and indie, DRUGZZ has created a mind-melting signature style completely of his own.

A collector of vintage drum gear, DRUGZZ is inspired by rhythm, and sitting at a drum set is crucial for his writing process.  He used an old Rogers drum set to make samples for the record, adding in the swirling synth sounds of the innovative Moog Sub Phatty. Citing influences such as Blink-182, The Chemical Brothers, Lupe Fiasco, Copeland, The National, Death Cab for Cutie.
